If you are struggling to find developers to work for you, you are not alone. There are simply not enough of them to go around. A Telegraph article on the most in demand workers in the UK put the IT sector at the top of the list. At the time of writing, they reported that there were more than 100,000 open positions in the sector being advertised across the UK.
Our observation, is that this shortage is particularly prevalent in the education technology sector. We can only speculate as to the reasons why. Because developers are in such demand, they clearly have the freedom to pick and choose where to work. Perhaps the culture of tech giants, the cash of financial services or the apparent allure of more consumer facing brands is more attractive than the world of education?
A UK developer shortage spreading abroad?
Many sectors turn to Eastern Europe to source developer talent. But interestingly, they are starting to feel the squeeze there too.
In Romania, a go-to place for digital talent, there are estimated to be 100,000 specialists working in IT. It’s thought 60,000 – 70,000 of those are software developers. However, demand is sufficient to require several hundred thousand Romanian developers. Established tech firms like Orange and Oracle have been reported to receive only a handful of CVs for in-demand positions like Java Developers. In contrast, marketing positions at blue chip firms get hundreds of applications.
Romanian universities are being asked to get even more IT students through their doors, and software companies are working together to create their own academies. Neighbouring Moldova is also seen as part of the solution where there is little difference in the language or culture.
